Max Bühlmann: Farbräume

Book presentation

With an introduction by Brigitte Borchhardt-Bierbaumer

Performance by Tamara Stajner and Max Bühlmann playing Klangskulpturen

The pictorial surface, in Max Bühlmann, is always pictorial space; painting is visual thinking in spaces. He constructs chromatic expanses of now subtle, now mannered color quality. An unexpected tilting of lines, a surprising clash of chromatic values, and a lively style are the characteristic features of his work, defying classification under conventional categories of abstract and concrete painting.

Bühlmann’s pictures evolve in parallel with his sculptural pieces. Works of plastic art often inspire him to create paintings and vice versa. After a number of volumes documenting his work in sculpture, this book presents the first survey of his painterly oeuvre, which spans several decades. With contributions by Brigitte Borchhardt-Birbaumer, Elisabeth Priedl, and Walter Tschopp. (Text by Elisabeth Priedl)
