Get out of the echo chamber! Strategies for opening art spaces

Yo-Yo Ma's Bach Project – Day of Action

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma comes to Vienna with his Bach project, a two-year journey during which the six suites for solo cello by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed at 36 venues around the world. As part of a “Day of Action”, Yo-Yo Ma exchanges ideas with local actors and organisations in addition to his concerts, in order to deal artistically with topics of local social importance. The “Days of Action” are to be understood as an invitation to a discussion about culture and how they can help us imagine and build a better future together.

On this evening, a participatory discussion event on the social opening of art spaces will take place at the Secession. Who can participate in culture at all and why are large sections of society underrepresented in the cultural sector?

How can there be a change of perspective that enables cultural participation for all and makes the cultural life of the city accessible to as many people as possible? Are there examples, strategies and innovative courses of action from which the art temples of this city can learn? How can art and culture counteract social divisions and support a strengthened coexistence?

All viewers and guests are cordially invited to take a seat on the free chair next to the invited discussants in the context of the Fishbowl discussion and to actively participate in the discussion with short contributions.
