VIDEO | Discussion with Yo-Yo Ma: Get out of the echo chamber!
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma came to Vienna with his Bach project, a two-year journey during which the six suites for solo cello by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed at 36 venues around the world. As part of a “Day of Action”, Yo-Yo Ma exchanges ideas with local actors and organisations in addition to his concerts, in order to deal artistically with topics of local social importance. On May 27, 2019, he initiated a “Day of Action” in Vienna, which began with a musical workshop in the Brunnenpassage. In the evening a participatory discussion about strategies for the opening of art spaces took place in the Secession. Who can participate in culture at all and why are large sections of society underrepresented in the cultural sector?
Yo-Yo Ma talked with Salah Ammo (musician), Sheri Avraham (artist and theatre maker, board member of IG Bildende Kunst), Can Gülcü (curator for urban societies, Wien Museum), Stefan Wallner (Brand Management and Company Transformation, Erste Group) and Anne Wiederhold-Daryanavard (artistic director of Brunnenpassage) about their experiences. Christiane Erharter (curator for community outreach, Belvedere 21) and Andy Icochea Icochea (artistic director of Superar) presented their initiatives.
The event was organised by the Secession, Brunnenpassage and Act.Now in cooperation with UNHCR Österreich and UNIS.
