| Phase 3 Exhibition TRESPASSING - SHAPING SPATIAL PRACTICES Secession, Main Gallery Press Discussion: Wednesday, September 11, 2002, 11.30 a.m. Opening: Thursday, September 12, 2002, 7 p.m. September 13 November 3, 2002 Participating Architects/Teams con: (Wien), C2S2 (Innsbruck), FAT ltd (London), the next ENTERprise - architects (Wien), offshore (Amsterdam), Pauhof (Wien), Schie 2.0 (Rotterdam), SPLITTERWERK (Graz), Klaus Stattmann (Wien), Wolfgang Tschapeller (Wien) Exhibition Concept By reference to the workshop discussions the present exhibition concept represents an attempt to convey in a meaningful way different strategies of individual and collective "trespassing" at the levels of production, documentation and communication. The intention is to present individual specialisations and characteristics as well as to provide a coherent (though always fragmentary) picture of those current tendencies in the field of architecture that we would describe as "trespassing". The exhibition will comprise existing material, works and projects selected by the curators on the one hand, and, on the other, draft projects commissioned from the architects/teams under the briefing "exhibition display / temporary infrastructure" (which will be realised for the exhibition). This production process, simultaneously individual and collective, will again enable the identification of exemplary strategies for the transgression and expansion of the defined briefings. The individual commissions will take into account the specialisations of the individual participants while forming part of a larger - heterogeneous, not homogeneous - whole, which will in any case demand a high degree of communication, coordination and co-operation. A further dimension will be provided by video (workshop) and audio (interviews) documentations of the "trespassing" process. In line with numerous requests, the process of reflection will be continued in structured form (simultaneously providing an important basic structure for the selection and positioning of the projects). All stages of the process will be communicated via our internal Internet platform, which will be available from the second week in July. The Secession will send out a mail containing detailed information and an introduction to the platform on 8/9 July 2002. I. Ongoing Research A) Participating Teams of Architects Ongoing re-reading of their own work (working methods) based on the interviews, briefings and workshop discussions; Structured according to the following areas: Format: text Texts will be posted on the internal web platform and annotated by the curators as well as the other participants; Deadline: throughout July, by the last week of July at the latest B) Curators S + A compose a text detailing their hypotheses, ideas, concepts and interpretations with regard to the Trespassing project, which will be continuously updated and posted on the internal web platform for comment by all participants. II. Exhibition Basic elements: Re. A) The temporary infrastructure of the exhibition will be used by the individual participants as a medium/tool/device for the conception, drafting and production of projects (Secession to be responsible for production management). The programme "exhibition display" will be placed at their disposal for this purpose. The latter can be expanded, reformulated, etc. etc. .... both through the respective specialised competences of the participants as well as through possible co-operations and the necessary cross-linking and coordination of approaches; this process is not restricted to the programmatic level, but can also take place at the technological level or at the level of an experiment in perception ... the aim being to address the question posed at the outset: "How can space be visualised and modelled as social space, as private or collective space, as a media space, a process oriented space, as a means of integration that is also capable of dealing with conflict?" # Pauhof - Facilities for presentation of texts, images, models ... # Splitterwerk - Facilities for multi-media presentation (projections) ... # TnE - "Furniture" (e.g. for the reception of audio material) # Fat - Lounge (for workshop video, various materials ...) # Schie - Editing and design of the workshop video material # Stattmann - Extended text and video library for the lounge incl. "book-holders" # Offshore - signage, visitor information tools, orientation within the space # Con: - External "interventionist" communication of the project, in the city, in the media # Tschapeller - Installation of a "leak" in/on the Secession building, topographic intervention (inside/outside, private/public, figure/background ...) # C2S2 - website with detailed background information to serve as a communication platform for a producers' forum after the exhibition # Sandrine, Angelika - publication Concepts, proposals by 20 July 2002 Re. B) Individual presentations: Selection to be made in consultation with the individual participants by the end of July Variable presentation formats: text, image, drawing, model, video, comp Re. C) Audio presentations: interviews will be edited by the participants themselves, condensed to a maximum of 3 manuscript pages; the edited version will then serve as the basis for the audio version and the web publication (the interviews with the 10 or so teams who are not participating in the exhibition but whose interviews will be published on the web will be edited by the curators) by the end of July For further information and photographic material please contact: Urte Schmitt-Ulms Secession, Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession Friedrichstraße 12, 1010 Vienna Tel: +43-1-5875307-21, Fax: +43-1-5875307-34 presse@secession.at |
