Florian Pumhösl, Secession 2000
Florian Pumhösl investigates the prerequisites
and meaning of the vocabulary of modern art in his spatial installations. Previous
projects included alternative designs and architectural plans that were deemed
'utopian' or the aesthetics of political exhibitions. The works that will be on
view in the Secession deal with the transfer of modernist architecture into non-industrial
or hardly industrialized states and delineate architectural and topographic changes.
They throw a contemporary light on post-colonial regions and reveal some of the
history of projects of modernization and emancipation geared towards these.

The works situated in the Main Hall of the Secession bring together elements from
the vocabulary of representative and every-day modern buildings from so-called
developing countries and reassemble them under the title Humanist and Ecological
Republic to form a fictitious urban situation. In doing so, anonymous and identifiable
architectural details are formed into an image whose arrangement helps delineate
different urban areas.

Pumhösl's video recordings which are on view in the Graphic Cabinet, are
devoted to the area of the Lac Mantasoa Reservoir in Madagascar, a region were
a huge industrial complex was been planned in the middle of the 19th century.
The complex, which was erected by the French immigrant Jean Laborde, was partially
destroyed in the course of anti-European outbreaks. Madagascar was under French
dominion only from 1895 onwards, and has been officially independent since 1960.
Part of site was submerged in 1936/37 during the building of the dam and the remains
were either converted or demolished. The picture that emerged from Madagascar
show the present conditions around the reservoir and the landscape underneath
the surface of the water.
