Since 1983, the Secession has been presenting the artistic positions and points
of view of young artist who are as yet little known to the art public (or who
have not yet been able to establish themselves) in its series of exhibition called
"Young Scene". It is an unusual feature for series of this nature to dispense
with the constraint of a predetermined timetable (such as Biennale, Triennial,
etc.) - this, however, is an integral part of the programme of "Young Scene" and
guarantees it as much flexibility as possible in the planning of exhibitions.
Every new instalment of "Young Scene" attempts to address generally accepted shifts
and changes in the play of demands and constants in the contemporary art scene
at a point in time when it seems opportune to do so because of the existing material
conditions. The only programmatic requirements that have been maintained since
the beginning of the series are that it focus on young artists who have not yet
established themselves in the consciousness of the art public and that their work
is presented within the framework of a group exhibition. Originally designed to
attempt to position new trends within the domestic art scene, "Young Scene" has
in recent years restricted itself exclusively to the presentation of Austrian
artists.
The "Young Scene 1998" exhibition has deviated from this point of view by acquiescing
to the increasing international networking of current artistic projects and developments
and has thus relinquished its former insistence on inviting exclusively local
artists to exhibit. However, this does not mean that the exhibition attempts to
present a complete and representative survey of all current international artistic
positions, but rather tries to concentrate on significant recent developments
without restricting itself to any geographically based limitations. The conceptual
openness of "Young Scene 1998" and the absence of any narrow thematic limits makes
the inclusion of different artistic positions possible. Furthermore, an exhibition
uniting such diverse positions will also encourage discussion of their common
ground and differences.
The work of the about 40 participating artists will be shown in all of the Secession's
exhibition spaces. Alongside this, projects in public spaces and in co-operation
with the museum in progress in the Austrian daily newspaper "Der Standard" are
planned.
