Philip Taaffe, Imaginary City, 1996

The artist, who was born in 1955 in New Jersey, is one of the most interesting exponents of modern American painting. He belongs to a group of artists that concentrate on a number of individual aspects of painting, such as colour, ornament and geometrical forms, and are therefore difficult to categorise according to traditional genres that range from abstract to expressionist art. Philip Taaffe has conceived a new cycle of works in which he investigates the rich ornamentation of Viennese Art Nouveau for his exhibition in the Main Hall of the Secession. This series of works consists of large-scale paintings to suit the ample exhibition spaces of the Main Hall of the Secession.
