Junge Szene, Hauptraum, 1996

The series of exhibitions known as "Junge Szene", which have been taking place regularly since 1983, is one of the most important venues in the Austrian art scene and has made a name for itself as a yardstick for new trends and artistic positions.

The basic idea of "Junge Szene '96" is to present groups of artist working in the 90s from all over Austria and who attempt to establish alternatives to the structural role of galleries and institutions. Personal initiative, self-sufficiency and independent activity outside of the institutionalised art world are particularly important elements here. In a period in which the art market is characterised by financial and structural problems, such activities are of particular significance to the development of alternative production, exhibition and communications systems that can make an important contribution to the extension of existing structures in the art world.

Around fifteen groups and groupings from all over Austria will be presented to the public. The exhibition will attempt to survey the creativity of this younger generation of artists by showing documentary, media and interactive installation material (which will be selected by the groups themselves). Works by individual or groups of artists who are involved in the project will be chosen by the participants. The concept and organisation of the exhibition will remain flexible, so that changes can be implemented and the whole can maintain its experimental character.

Participants:

AUDIODROOM (VIENNA), ARTOPHOBIA (GRAZ), BASILICA (VIENNA), ETOY (VIENNA), BÜRO JOSEF BÖHM (SALZBURG), DIE FABRIKANTEN (LINZ), DER FOND (GRAZ), GELATIN & ING. HERBERT HÜBNER (VIENNA), G.R.A.M (GRAZ), H.A.P.P.Y (VIENNA), HEGER/DEJANOV (VIENNA), HILUS (VIENNA), KOMMUNIKATIONSBÜRO (VIENNA), KUNSTRADIO (VIENNA), PUBLIC NETBASE (VIENNA), JONATHAN QUINN (VIENNA), TRABANT (VIENNA).

Alongside staging individual events and performances, the artists will also be publishing their own newsletter during the course of the exhibition, which will help to underline its character as "work in progress" and - accompanied by theoretical texts - will outline its programme and all of the works on exhibit.
